Written and directed by Jerrod B. Jordahl, Pointland: A Play for Audio follows a disgraced recluse and his staff in the weeks leading up to their mysterious departure from his large family estate. As their final day approaches, and the external begins to weaken his façade, a series of surreal encounters will force the man to accept loss of control. A study in an individual’s estrangement, the play explores the diaphanous nature of memory and the ability of nostalgia to restore the interior landscape.
Proceeds from record sales directed to the Des Moines Public School’s educational program RunDSM, which inspires younger generations of Iowans to harness their creativity and engenders empathy and critical thinking. More information about RunDSM can be found on their website, www.rundsm.org.

Jerrod B. Jordahl began writing Pointland: A Play for Audio in 2012. Having already staged a number of underground productions of his original plays (A Scene of a Struggle, My God Blue, etc.), Jordahl sought to complete a work that further distilled his preferred theatrical elements to their essence, germinating the idea to produce a play for audio. Pointland allowed Jordahl to fully realize his vision through theme and medium while showcasing the talent of diverse Iowa artists, many of whom collaborated with Jordahl on previous projects. In 2013, Bryon Dudley (Spacement Recording Studio), a co-producer and director of Jordahl’s early plays, joined the effort to produce Pointland; Dudley served as sound engineer and editor. This partnership supported an unfunded production of Pointland that was recorded in Ames, Iowa, but never completed. It became clear that to better serve this ambitious work and those lending their talents to the project, funding would be required.
After being awarded a grant from the Iowa Arts Council in the fall of 2014, Jordahl and Dudley began again the process of producing the play. Now joined by co-producer Chris Lyng (Mumford’s), pre-production took shape while simultaneously assembling the cast, securing recording locations, and commissioning original artwork and music. Many actors from the 2013 production rejoined the cast, with other parts being filled through auditions in Des Moines, Iowa. In conversation with Jordahl, Ames-based artist Devin Walker created artwork and designed the layout for the album cover. Original music was arranged by Paul Hertz (Mumford’s), Kate Kennedy (Pennyhawk, Neon and Nude), and Philip Rabalais (Utopia Park, Trouble Lights).
The production team decided to record each scene live and from the singular perspective of the main character. This experimental approach was a result of the production team’s desire to reinforce the thematic elements of the play, while also providing an immersive listening experience. Recording sessions were held outside of the studio, emphasizing non-traditional locations as a method of imbuing the environment with its own character. In December of 2014, recording began at the Chapman House Collective in Des Moines, Iowa.
From the very beginning, the collaborative nature of this project ensured realization of the production team’s vision. Pointland brought together myriad disciplines, from individual artists to cultural organizations, culminating in a unique and challenging work.
