Release date: 04/07/2015
Brooks Strause is a new addition to the Maximum Ames Records stable of artists, but he is not new to the Iowa music community. Considered by a cult following both locally and nationally to be one of our generation’s most prolific, prescient, and prophetic songwriters, Brooks’ lyrics tells us about our own world in ways that make us question everything. With each release and new song, he digs deeper, but never offers answers. That’s up to you.
Brooks Strause’s classic 2009 album Dead Animals is now available on vinyl for the first time ever, with each track remixed by the artist (2014) and remastered (Focus Mastering, 2014). The LP is packaged with the originally intended artwork (never before printed) and includes a bonus 7″ record featuring four new recordings from Brooks Strause, one original and three covers (see below for full track listing). Besides the track “A Kiss Is Not A Kiss”, which you can listen to below, the remixed and remastered tracks and cover songs are available only on vinyl. You won’t hear this magic anywhere else.

Reviews of Dead Animals:
“[Brooks Strause] emotion poured out with each note and each gravelly lyric. Even with his face hidden behind a thick beard, you could still see the emotional toll each song seemed to take. It was almost like you could feel the lines in his face just with his voice. It was a unique and magical experience.”
-David Murphy, desmoinesisnotboring.com
“[Brooks Strause] ability to put his heart on his sleeve was hypnotic and what he had to say and how he chose to say it was wrapped in this emotional blanket and etched on his face. Only, the emotions weren’t just his. He projected in a way that you couldn’t help but feel what he felt and believe what he believed.”
-Dave Murphy, iowavesmusic.com
“Strause is not sad. He’s not scared. He’s just taking it all in, like a coal-burning stove, letting the fires melt off the fingerprints off of his fingers and the smiles from his faces, and bringing in the soot, letting it deposit itself all along his inner walls like a new coat of indoor painting.”
“Like all truly great artists, Brooks Strause’s songs sound familiar and completely original at the same time. The true original sound of Iowa. The music of Brooks Strause is an absolutely essential part of any serious music collection.”
-Dave Deibler of House of Large Sizes
