The second annual Maximum Ames Music Festival was a huge success because of the overwhelming enthusiasm and support of this great community. We hosted over 130 bands over four days in twenty different venues all over town. Music ranged from folk to punk, from pop to bluegrass, from jazz to metal, from rock to country and everything in between. And the massive schedule of events ran smoothly thanks to the committed and talented group of volunteers who operated the event.

The festival’s audience nearly doubled from last year. We were honoured to host major headlining acts in some of Ames’ finest facilities, including Ames City Auditorium and Bandshell Park. It was such a thrill to bring internationally renowned artists like Wanda Jackson, Jeff Mangum, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and more right here to our beloved home of Ames! And we loved working with the hundreds of local and regional musicians who played the festival and who make this scene happen every day.

We are so grateful to the businesses and nonprofits that sponsor Maximum Ames Music Festival and to the Ames Visitors and Conventions Bureau for providing us with a grant. We are excited to continue to collaborate with, and be a faithful partner to, Ames’ business community for years to come.

And we are especially grateful to the thousands of local residents and the hundreds of out-of-town visitors who make MAMF possible by coming out partake of the festival and celebrate the culture of our community. Maximum Ames is proud to be a part of this state’s brilliant and thriving arts community.

UUVVWWZ

Lincoln, Nebraska based UUVVWWZ have been compared to the likes of Deerhoof, Captain Beefheart and Bow Wow Wow. UUVVWWZ occasionally tours and plays mostly in the Lincoln and Omaha areas after the release of their debut album and will make a trip to Ames to play in the wake of a new album and more extensive touring.

Old Scratch Revival Singers

Old Scratch Revival Singers,  is a seven piece band who plays acoustically. Their songs explore the ideas of the original project and thoughts on life. Old Scratch Revival Singers influences include a variety of American roots such as bluegrass, ragtime and gospel. Members include Brooks Strause who played last year’s festival.

Jon Wayne and the Pain

Reggae-Rock fusion band Jon Wayne and the Pain from Minneapolis brings a mix of reggae, rock and dub with some electronic dance elements to the variety of sounds in the Maximum Ames Music Festival lineup. The band tours frequently and their stop at the festival will provide a unique sound and experience for those attending the festival.

Phoenix L’Amour

Phoenix L’Amour brings her burlesque routine to the festival. The Des Moines performer and founder of St. Vitus and the Taxi Dancers also performs with the touring group Super Happy Funtime Burlesques, heads the Iowa School of Burlesque producer of Burlesque, Baby!!! will offer a one of a kind event to the festival. Phoenix L’Amour has toured regulary since 2009 and performs with a wide range of entertaining from comedy to the provoking.

BeJae Fleming

BeJae Fleming began playing the blues in Texas and became known for her blues guitar playing and lyric writing abilities. She has toured a range of events from the small shops to large stages and will share her critically acclaimed act to festival goers. Born in North Carolina, BeJae Fleming provides a Midwestern influence on the roots rock scene and plays regularly in the Ames area.

This year’s lineup features a mix of internationally renowned artists and homegrown Iowa talent. Jeff Mangum has earned millions of avid fans around the world as the songwriting force behind the groundbreaking band Neutral Milk Hotel. Mangum’s music and voice possess a captivating force that has entranced listeners for years. Neutral Milk Hotel is a founding member of the famed Elephant 6 collective of Athens, GA that has revolutionized pop music in the past two decades.

After releasing three influential records, including the modern classic “In An Aeroplane Over the Sea,” Mangum took almost a decade off from playing shows. Since returning to live performance last year, fans have flocked to witness his powerful stage presence. This show will also include a performance by The Music Tapes, another original project of the Elephant 6 collective whose members have also played in Neutral Milk Hotel. Years ago, The Music Tapes played a show in the Ames home of Patrick Tape Fleming of The Poison Control Center, a classic local rock band that also has ties to the Elephant 6 crew. The PCC will open this once-in-a-lifetime concert.

Wanda Jackson is an icon of American music. She is known as “the Queen of Rockabilly” and universally acknowledged as a rock and roll pioneer. Now in her seventies, Jackson is still going strong and delivering the fiery vocals and stage presence that have influenced generations of artists. Last year we brought national acts like The Mountain Goats, Xiu Xiu, and Euforquestra to Ames, but we’ve got even bigger ambitions this year!
